Fleming College

Background

Fleming College first opened in 1967 as a college of applied arts and technology. Located in the heart of the Kawarthas in the City of Peterborough, Fleming’s Sutherland Campus is the college’s largest campus with approximately 4,380 full-time students. With 200 acres of park-like green space, the campus features state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities and six on-campus student residence buildings. Fleming College is named for Sir Sandford Fleming who was a famous Canadian visionary, engineer and inventor. Fleming was born in Kircaldy, Scotland in 1827 and moved to Peterborough in 1845. He was responsible for many advances in Canada including construction of the Trans-Canada railway, laying the first trans-Atlantic telephone cable, the invention of Universal Standard Time, and designing Canada’s first postage stamp. Fleming College is inspired by Sir Sandford Fleming’s powerful legacy and are excited about the future of education as they mark the 50th anniversary of the College in 2017.
